We are growing used to the idea of AI impacting our daily lives – usually for the better. It recommends songs to play, helps us find our way around unfamiliar cities and tries to answer any question we care to ask. We are close to breakthroughs in AI-assisted healthcare and driverless cars promise to make our roads safer and less congested. <BR> <BR>But there’s a darker side too. AI’s reach has grown in ways most of us did not see coming, with knock-on effects ranging from an epidemic of misinformation, in which AI is being used to distort our sense of reality, to unprecedented levels of surveillance. Face recognition systems are rapidly being adopted by police forces and the military around the world, with big implications for privacy. And this year also saw the first pedestrian killed by a driverless car.</P>

<P>We’ve been trying to create machines that mimic human intelligence for more than 75 years. When Alan Turing asked in 1950 “Can machines think?” he captured the imaginations of the best minds in computing and neuroscience. For decades, attempts to build such a machine were hit and miss, and more than once the grand project faltered. All that changed in the last few years, however. Thanks to the success of machine learning, there are not many tasks at which AI does not excel. Machine learning is involved in ever more crucial, life-changing decisions, from filtering job applications and recommending parole for prisoners to making medical diagnoses and identifying human targets on the battlefield. There’s no denying that AI’s impact will be global – the question now is how to wield this incredibly powerful tool safely and responsibly. <BR> <BR>At this event, six expert speakers will guide you through the basics of AI, from conception to current successes, and introduce you to some of the biggest questions we now face. Can Facebook’s algorithms influence elections? Are driverless cars safe? How will AI affect the job market? How do we stop AI from boosting existing prejudices? What’s really worth worrying about?
