Our families often comprise three or four generations living together or close by. Traditions and culture, skills and trades, music and story, and financial and emotional support are transferred between us.Our conference will provide a unique opportunity to hear from a diverse range of activists, academics, artists and educationalists working in the field of equity and inclusion. Each speaker brings a unique perspective and wealth of knowledge that will enrich our understanding and discussions on the subject. The inclusion of Gypsy, Roma, and Traveller history, language, and culture in schools nationally is a pressing issue that has spanned across many generations and remains a matter of grave concern. This conference is a crucial platform to explore how particular schools, community organizations, and local authorities work with families across multiple generations. We will also explore how the communities themselves, through innovative community-organized projects, are combating institutional anti-gypsysim and navigating challenges posed by contemporary society. Rejecting a cultural deficit approach to understanding educational outcomes experienced by Romani and Traveller people in the British education system, we aim to promote counter-narratives to present a more nuanced, holistic, and authentic discourse surrounding educational experiences and outcomes.The day will focus on knowledge sharing, connecting people and celebrating how wisdom is passed across generations.
