Note: This class is in the Hughes Room (not Fry Room)

Whether you are an aspiring artist or simply looking for a new creative outlet, this new class from watercolorist Ann Mackowski will provide you with the tools and knowledge to create stunning watercolour portraits. This intermediate watercolour portraiture class is designed for those who already have a basic understanding of watercolour techniques and are looking to take their portraiture skills to the next level with top of the line, professional artist-grade materials. Everything you need is provided, making this welcoming class accessible to anyone with an interest in the subject matter.

In a small group setting, you’ll be able to get one on one attention and guidance that will lead to rapid improvements in your own work. Plus, with video tutorials on the topics covered in class available to all students—you’ll be able to practice the material we’ll cover to your heart’s content after class.

For a complete rundown of the days content, please see the Agenda.

If you’re a complete beginner—don’t worry! Ann’s running a class for absolute beginners from 10:30-1:30pm—click here for more details.

The class will cover both practicalities and “behind the scenes” artists’ tips and tricks to achieving compelling watercolour portraits.

To achieve the value range necessary for watercolour portraiture and to learn about colour theory, we'll begin the class by using Anilinky dye based watercolours, which will be used with Seawhite Watercolour Paper (2 per student). These are great for learning glazing techniques, which you’ll need to practice in order to build up necessary speed and pressure. We will then move on to using professional-grade watercolours and Baohong Watercolour Paper (1 piece per student). Cartridge paper will be available for sketches, studies, and colour testing. You will be given a sample set of the following, worth around £10--any unused portion of which you are free to transfer to your own palette to take home:

MaimeriBlu Primary Cyan

Windsor and Newton Artists Yellow Ochre

MaimeriBlu Burnt Sienna

Windsor and Newton Artists Alazarin Crimson

MaimeriBlu Quinacridone Violet

MaimeriBlu Cadmium Orange Red

MaimeriBlu Burnt Umber

Ann will also be providing an additional video version of the day’s portrait using these materials watercolours for the days exercise for you to practice after class should you so wish.

This class is for anyone with a willingness to absorb and practice material learned in class, and learn some more challenging concepts in Watercolour Portraiture that will eventually lead to big payoffs in your own work! Spaces are limited to 10 people so sign up now to reserve your spot.
