Our Festival of Social Science 2019 will run from2-9 November 2019, with events over 450 events being held across the UK. ESRC Festival of Social Science

Social media, misinformation, digital politics, digital economies, online labour, cryptocurrencies, cyberwarfare, cyberlove - the internet has changed our lives a lot, or has it?This November, researchers from the University of Oxford will join us at the pub to talk about how the internet has changed the way we work; and even the way we love. We’ll also learn about the dangers that hide behind the algorithms that rule our daily lives. Every evening will start with a pub quiz (how's your Internet knowledge?), followed by an informal conversation between internet researchers and the audience. Grab your pint and swipe right! Internet on Tap is an event inspired by Pint of Science, but instead of bringing contemporary natural scientific developments to the public, Internet on Tap will focus on the social science of the internet, how it has changed society, and how society is changing it back. The issues that will be discussed each evening are drawn from current topics of research at Oxford University’s Department of Sociology, Institute of Cognitive &amp; Evolutionary Anthropology and Oxford Internet Institute. Each evening is focused on a theme, such as how the web has changed our personal and work relationships; and the dangers of bias in the algorithms behind our daily lives: 4 Nov 2019, 7pm-10pm: Personal Life and Wellbeing 5 Nov 2019, 7pm-10pm: Future of Work? 6 Nov 2019, 7pm-10pm: Algorithms, Power and Politics
 
Do you know how much time the average person in the UK spends on the internet per day? Or how many swipes someone takes, on average, to find a match on Tinder? Starting each evening with a pub quiz on our theme, we will host a conversation between social science researchers and our audience; sharing and developing knowledge through discussion. We hope to see you there!
