This session is led by lawyer - linguist <a href="https://avocate.co.uk/" title="https://avocate.co.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Sue Leschen</a> who has been a regular prison interpreter for the last 20 years.The webinar aims to cover what you need to know if a prisoner's lawyers book you to interpret at a prison. These visits can be challenging and are not for the faint hearted!Different types of prison spanning from high to low security<ul><li>Categories A, B, C and D</li><li>Prisons for women and young adults</li><li>Low to high security mental hospitals</li><li>Young Offenders Institutions (YOI's) (Ages 18 - 21 years)</li><li>Youth Custody Detention (Aged under 18 years)</li></ul>How interpreters get into prison<ul><li>Letter of introduction from clients (solicitors)</li><li>ID</li><li>Physical body check by security</li></ul>What interpreters do in prisons<ul><li>Accompany solicitors to interpret their preparations for court hearings: consideration of the evidence and drafting of statements </li><li>Attend video - links to court hearings and conferences with barristers</li></ul>Issues for prison interpreters<ul><li>Interpreting for both remand and convicted prisoners: prisoner clients may be thieves, rapists, murderers</li><li>Interpreting at court video - links where the prisoners' lawyers are not physically present in the prison: client asks interpreter for advice, emotional and other support </li></ul>
