This course is aimed at those who are interested in New Monasticism and new forms of Christian spiritual/religious ecclesial communities in the context of building new expressions of Church including the Fresh Expressions initiative. It is aimed at those who either have no or little experience of such communities, or who want the space to explore them more practically and theologically.

What will happen?

The course will be run over the Zoom app with supportive handouts to explore four different aspects of missional new monastic communities. This will be run on Monday Evenings over four weeks.

What will I gain out of the experience?

  • A greater understanding of the marks of New Monastic Communities and the four practical outworkings.
  • A greater appreciation of the theology and vocation behind New Monastic Communities that draw on the charisms and understandings of traditional monasticism and the religious life.
  • A greater appreciation for the differing forms of New Monasticism in differing countries.

Who is running this learning experience?

`The 4 sessions will be led by Revd Canon Dr Ian Mobsby who has over twenty six years experience of New Monastic Communities, who has been involved in founding three communities and helping to form two new forms currently. The Moot Community in the City of London, the Wellspring Community Peckham, the Blackfriars Community London UK and supporting leaders in Canada to form two new communities. Ian has responsibility for formation in the new monastic society of the Holy Trinity, and in 2019 was awarded the Dustan Award by the Archbishop of Canterbury for his exceptional contribution to the creation and growth of new religious communities. Ian is now the Diocesan Community Missioner working for the Anglican Diocese of Niagara and the Canon for Missional Theology in the same diocese. Ian has written and spoken widely about missional new monasticism in the UK and abroad particularly in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.

Ian Mobsby has ten year’s experience as a Lay Pioneer and sixteen years as an Ordained Pioneer Minister in the Church of England.  He has been involved in founding five Fresh Expressions of Church including three new monastic communities and an alternative worship community in a Parish ‘mixed economy’ context in Central and South London.  Ian is also the Guardian of the New Monastic Society of the Holy Trinity a Pioneering fraternity seeking to plant missional new monastic communities in the UK and beyond. Ian has in the past played a part in the National Fresh Expressions team. He is currently pioneering a new more contemplative missional community just south of Blackfriars Bridge in Central London, and the Diocesan Assistant Dean for Fresh Expressions and Pioneer Ministry and the Chair of the Diocese of Southwark Spiritual Formation Group.  As a former Occupational Therapist Ian has worked within Mental Health services and complex disability rehabilitation.   Ian is fully aware of the consequences and challenges of Pioneer Ministry, who himself experienced serious burnout as a consequence to his own inability to surrender and trust God in a difficult former working missional context.
