At its heart, data science is a set of tools for turning impenetrable datasets into clear insights &amp; decisions that can help you to achieve your goals. This workshop series will introduce you to several of these tools with the aim of giving you practical skills to take away and immediately apply in your own work.

Part I (Mon 5th): A Crash Course in Coding
The first workshop will focus on learning the Python programming language and related libraries for importing, manipulating and visualising datasets. Part II (Wed 7th): Dabbling with Data
The first workshop leads straight into Part II, which will cover more advanced data visualisation techniques, creating your own datasets by scraping web pages, and a brief introduction to building your own regression models. The workshops will be hands-on throughout with code examples and exercises provided to apply what you've just learned. We strongly encourage you to attend both workshops if possible as they are designed to run together. There are no pre-requisites other than a laptop and your own curiosity.

The workshops are being delivered by <A HREF="https://twitter.com/john_sandall" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">John Sandall,</A> a Fellow of <A HREF="https://nwspk.com/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Newspeak House</A> (a residential college focused on the study and practice of civic technology) and Founder of <A HREF="https://sixfifty.org.uk/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">SixFifty</A> (a project aiming to predict the 2017 UK General Election using open data and machine learning). The examples and datasets covered during these workshops will be centred around political and open data, although the techniques taught will have applications across a wide variety of industries and sectors. 
 
<H2>Pre-requisites &amp; preparation</H2>
Bring a laptop with <A HREF="https://www.anaconda.com/download/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Anaconda</A> pre-installed. Ensure you select to download Python 3.6 (or Python 3.7), but not Python 2.7. You can get this from https://www.anaconda.com/download/. If you would like some assistance with getting everything set up correctly, this will be available when doors open 30 minutes prior to the workshops starting.

John Sandall is the Founder and Principal Data Scientist at <A HREF="https://www.linkedin.com/in/johnsandall/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Coefficient</A>, a data consultancy offering data science, engineering, machine learning and other AI-related services as well as bespoke training courses.
