About this event

  • Event lasts 3 hours

This workshop will introduce you to a variety of bookmaking techniques, from simple cut and folds to hand-stitched and hard-back covers. You will take away at least five handmade books, and ideas for how you can explore bookmaking further in your own time.

This workshop is an introduction to bookmaking, suitable for those who have never made a book before and would like to know how to get started. You will be taken through how to use basic book making equipment, shown how to use it safely and effectively; be guided step-by-step in making a range of books; and shown tips and tricks to get the best out of your bookmaking projects.

You will be shown how to make:

1. ‘Hot Dog’ fold – great for zines

2. Accordion fold – a playful and interactive book

3. Pamphlet stitch – a fundamental hand-stitching process

4. Dos a dos – a back-to-back book

5. Leporello – a hard cover concertina book

You will leave with blank books that you can use yourself or give away, and some knowledge and suggestions for how to take bookmaking further. There is no minimum ability expected, however be mindful that this is an intro to workshop, and that bookmaking requires a moderate degree of hand dexterity (e.g. using a craft knife, needle and thread).
