UCL Extreme Citizen Science

As an introduction to our HEIDI roundtable, we’ll hold a brief talk to introduce the concepts of Citizen Science

This talk will serve as an introduction to a roundtable discussion (details below) and you will be very welcome to attend either the talk, the roundtable or both as you wish. This talk will last 30 minutes and provide an introduction to the enormous variety of topics, tools and methods within Citizen Science, with a focus on the place of Citizen Science within communities. You will be invited to consider whether it would be useful for any community you belong to and, if so, how higher education institutions could help you get your project started.The Erasmus+ <a href="https://heidiproject.eu/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">HEIDI project </a>is running a series of roundtables to research the experiences of different groups and communities of “Digital Action” - citizen science, makeathons and hackathons. Last autumn we ran <a href="https://uclexcites.blog/2021/12/20/mapping-the-barriers-and-drivers-of-digital-action-within-higher-education-institutions-project-heidi/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">five roundtables for staff and students in Higher Education Institutions</a>, and we are now moving to communities across the UK and beyond.

We would like to know more about the experiences of people who do not study or work in Higher Education Institutions and whether Digital Action is, or could be, useful to you. If you attend this talk you will be very welcome to stay for the following roundtable at 18:00, which would include points such as:
<ul><li>Are you familiar with Digital Action, either as a participant or simply having heard about it?
</li><li>Are there any environmental problems or issues that concern you in your country of residence?
</li><li>What are some of the primary social issues that concern you in the community you are resident in now?
</li><li>How can the community, or local government organisations, support you?
</li><li>Would you benefit from upskilling in the areas of Digital Action (citizen science, makeathons or hackathons)? Would this benefit your community or organisation?
</li></ul>

Citizen Science For All Talks
The Citizen Science for All Talks is a series of webinars and special events which invite world-leading experts on citizen science to give a talk in their field of expertise to share their experiences and knowledge with our diverse audience, including those who at the moment know very little about Citizen Science. It is organised by UCL’s People Nature Lab and Extreme Citizen Science.

What Is Citizen Science?
There are many forms of Citizen Science, and no single definition captures them all! In general, it means that members of the public who aren’t currently working as scientists get involved in scientific research. This may be something very simple like using their smartphone to measure sky brightness, or it may be very involved such as getting a group of people together and learning scientific methods to monitor and report pollution. There are many public Citizen Science projects on an enormous range of topics.

What Is HEIDI?
The Erasmus+ project, HEIDI (“Digital Action at HEIs as a catalyst for social change in the Covid-19 crisis”), aims to provide training (for staff, decision makers, students, librarians, and communities) enabling Higher Education Institutions to better embrace and support bottom-up digital action (i.e. hackathons, makeathons and citizen science initiatives). Until 2023 we will be running 90 events (in the UK, France, Malta, Cyprus and Greece) and aim to engage more than 3,000 people.
