'Introduction to  Cloud Computing'  Workshop from Oracle for Research

The mission of the Academic Careers Office (ACO) is to promote, support and develop all aspects of academic and clinical academic careers in the School of Life and Medical Sciences (SLMS).Our focus is on developing people in order to transform society and deliver extraordinary improvements in human health and well-being. This workshop, run by Oracle for Research,  aims to give research students introductory training in cloud computing.

University College London

This 1-day course involves both lecture material and a hands-on workshop where you will be granted your own Oracle Cloud tenancy with £750 credit to experiment with. The session covers the very basics of cloud computing, what it is and why it can be useful for research, before moving into the core components of any cloud platform. We will explore networking, compute and storage with an emphasis on how they can be put to good use in the world of scientific research. The workshop itself covers creating and using SSH keys, creating and accessing virtual compute resources, storing and accessing your data and running programmes, all on the cloud. This course requires no specialist prior training or understanding of cloud computing, all that we ask is that you bring a laptop and some enthusiasm! Following the course, you will have the opportunity to apply for an Oracle for Research Doctoral Project Award. If successful, this award will provide you with a grant of free cloud credits, worth upwards of £10,000, to support your research along with technical support and marketing opportunities to share your work with the world. Whether you know you need substantial computing resources for your research or just want to learn a valuable new skill, this course will give you understanding you need to put cloud to good use.This training day has been designed with the purpose of helping students acquire a new skillset which will be useful for their PhD projects, future research or future careers.Please note this is also a Pilot Scheme for UCL and numbers are limited.
