Introduction to Git & GitHub 2026
Git and GitHub enable management and sharing of code
This 1-day course will provide an introduction to Git and GitHub, showing the benefits of version control software for managing your code.
The use of code is widespread throughout science, for both numerical modelling and data processing.
Git and GitHub enable management and sharing of code. Therefore, anyone who uses or develops code (including python, R, Matlab, etc.), for any purpose, would benefit from using this software.
This 1-day course will provide an introduction to Git and GitHub, and how to use it, covering topics such as:
- What is Git and GitHub?
- How can I use Git/GitHub to manage my own projects?
- How can I use GitHub to collaborate with others?
The course will involve both presentations and practical exercises. Therefore, **attendees will need to provide their own laptop** (no computing facilities will be provided).
What else do I need to attend the course?
- No prior knowledge of Git/GitHub is required.
- Attendees should have at least a basic knowledge of coding, but this can be in any language.
This course is open to those associated with either Cefas or UEA (including ARIES DTP students). It will run in-person only, so please only register if you plan to attend in-person at UEA, Norwich.
Please select the relevant ticket for your organisation on registration.
Travel to UEA?
UEA is accessible by both car and public transport.
For those not based as UEA (e.g., ARIES students and Cefas staff), funds should be available to support travel. Please contact your supervisor or line manager to discuss options.
