Introduction to Global Learning Workshop

The British Councilis the UK’s international organisation for cultural relations and educational opportunities. We were founded in 1934 and incorporated by Royal Charter in 1940. We create friendly knowledge and understanding between the people of the UK and other countries. We do this by making a positive contribution to the UK and the countries we work with – changing lives by creating opportunities, building connections and engendering trust. We work with more than 100 countries across the world in the fields of arts and culture, the English language, education and civil society. Last year, we reached more than 80 million people directly and 791 million people overall, including online, through broadcasts and publications. Connecting Classrooms is a partnership between the British Council and the Department for International Development, and is designed to prepare young people for life in a global society and work in a global economy. We support teachers to develop their classroom practice in core skills – the six essential skills that young people need to prosper in the 21st Century. This will help them shape the future for themselves and generations to come.Sir Thomas Rich'sis a progressive selective grammar school for boys in Years 7 to 11 and young men and women in the Sixth Form. <H3><STRONG></STRONG>Connecting Classrooms through Global Learning helps schools make connections locally and globally, encouraging schools in the UK to develop partnerships with schools in other countries and embed global learning in the classroom.</H3>
<H5>This free introductory workshop - delivered by the British Council and hosted by Sir Thomas Rich's School in Gloucester - examines what is meant by ‘global learning’, and considers how this relates to your school vision.</H5>
<P>Delegates will:</P>

<P>gain an overview of what global learning can offer to your staff and students</P>
</LI>
<LI>
<P>develop a deeper understanding of global learning in the curriculum and apply this to in-school experience by considering change in the curriculum</P>
</LI>

<P>become familiar with change processes and opportunities through the curriculum</P>
</LI>
<LI>
<P>explore and challenge dominant images and perceptions of people living in poverty</P>
</LI>
<LI>
<P>present and discuss materials that explore a variety of images and perspectives</P>
</LI>

<P>reflect on how to adapt materials and apply learning to your school context.</P>

<P>This workshop is suitable for primary and secondary teachers currently teaching in Gloucestershire schools with an interest in global learning, who would like to find out more about the British Council's Connecting Classrooms programme. School support staff are also welcome to attend.<BR></P>
