Who is the course for?
This course is aimed at quantitative researchers and data analysts who are familiar with cross-sectional data analysis methods and would like to learn about longitudinal or panel data methods.
Pre-requisites: Attendees are expected to:
- Have a basic knowledge of cross-sectional linear regression (OLS),
- Have a working knowledge of using Stata via use of syntax files (aka do-files in Stata) for data management and cross-sectional analysis,
- Have a working knowledge of the longitudinal/panel survey, Understanding Society. If not, then we higly recommend that you attend the Introduction to Understanding Society using Stata – 2 day workshop prior to attending this workshop, as informaiton covered in this workshop will not be repeated. These are held 3 times a year, twice online (20 & 21 March and 20 & 21 November) and once in-person (9 & 10 June). If you cannot attend the workshops, you can take the self-directed version of the course online.
What will I learn?
At this in-person hands-on workshop you will learn about:
- Data management for panel data methods
- Analyse research questions using key linear panel data estimators using an example research question and data from a nationally representative longitudinal/panel survey (Understanding Society). Specifically, you will learn how to implement different linear panel data methods (Fixed Effects, Random Effects, Random Effects with Mundlak Corrections, Pooled OLS), how to compare and interpret these estimates, how to choose a suitable estimator.
Course content and format:
The workshop will be online and free to attend.
This is an intensive one-day workshop. The course is a combination of lectures followed by Q&A sessions and hands-on sessions. During the hands-on sessions you will work through worked-out examples aimed at helping you to learn how to implement the linear panel data methods to answer a specific research question: choosing the variables and the sample, setting up the data, analysing the data using panel data methods taught in the lectures and interpreting the results. Course tutor(s) will be available during the hands-on-sessions to answer your queries, review process and discuss issues. The course will end with a short lecture session where tutor(s) will discuss the estimation results produced in these exercises.
The survey data used in these exercises will be Understanding Society and the statistical software used will be Stata.
Further details about the course and the course schedule will be provided after registration.
Course materials:
Participants will be provided with the lecture slides, and the Stata syntax files to implement worked-out examples.
Software and technical requirements
Participants must ensure that Stata version 13 or later is installed on their laptop/PC, and they have downloaded the Understanding Society data (instructions will be provided on how to do this prior to the workshop).
