At Derbyshire Wildlife Trust we want to encourage everyone to explore the beautiful green spaces our county has to offer. But taking your first solo steps into our countryside can be a daunting prospect. If you have ever longed to escape the crowds but lacked the confidence to get off the beaten track, this short course will help kick start your adventures!

Join us on our Introduction to Map Reading course to develop your practical expertise and learn essential map reading and field skills to plan your own days out, follow simple routes and stay safe in the countryside. The course begins with an indoor classroom session to support your theoretical understanding of map reading and countryside awareness, before a guided walk with your tutor in our wonderful Middleton surroundings to put your new skills into practice.

Level: Beginner / little or no previous navigation or map reading experience.

Age: Under 16s booking onto this course must be accompanied by a paying adult

Things to bring: Please bring a packed lunch, a water bottle and appropriate outdoor clothing and sturdy footwear for the guided walk part of the session. If you prefer to walk with hiking poles feel free to bring these too. You may also wish to bring pen and paper for note taking.(Hot drinks and biscuits provided).

Please note: The outdoor session includes a walk of around 3 miles (starting and ending at the venue). The pace will be adjusted to the group but you should be comfortable covering this distance.

Where can I park?

We have free onsite parking at our Middleton HQ.

Can I get to the venue by public transport?

Nearest stop: 'Middleton By Wirksworth, adjacent to the Rising Sun'. Buses between Matlock and Ashbourne: Service 110 / 111. Buses between Derby and Matlock: The Sixes 6.1 + local service from Wirksworth. Check times before travel.

How much walking is involved?

The guided walk as part of the session will last up to 2 hours. We will be walking on public footpaths with some moderate inclines but we will go at a pace suitable for the whole group.

What facilities will there be?

The classroom session will take place indoors with access to toilets and a small kitchen area. During the guided walk there will be no indoor facilities.

If I book but I am no longer able to attend, what is your refund policy?

If you are unable to attend the course after booking please email: trainingenquiries@derbyshirewt.co.uk at least 7 days prior to the event. Unfortunately, cancellations made less than 7 days in advance of the event will not be able to claim a refund.

Can I transfer my ticket to somebody else?

What is your cancellation policy?

Derbyshire Wildlife Trust reserves the right to cancel the course at any time. Attendees will be notified at least 24 hours in advance and will be entitled to a full refund.

Will the event be postponed if there is bad weather?

Unfortunately we cannot control the weather so most courses will go ahead as planned. However, in extreme cases we may cancel/postpone if the weather is likely to pose an unacceptable risk to staff and attendees. Wherever possible, we will contact attendees prior to the event start time to advise.
