Audience Level: Beginner

This workshop will teach Python from the very beginning and assumes no knowledge or experience of programming. This training session is perfect for newcomers who are just starting out and want to learn the basics.


Session Information:

Python is a well-established language for data analysis. This course is going to start from the beginning, showing you the basic data types and instructions to perform simple tasks and as you become more confident and follow the later courses (Introduction to Data Analysis in Python, Applied Data Analysis in Python), you will find that you are able to write much more complex programmes.

Action required before the session:

Please bring along your own laptop with a working Python installation. If you don’t have Python on your laptop, we recommend installing it via Anaconda following these instructions.

We are running an in-person and online JGI drop-in installation session on Friday 30th May from 11:30-12:45 - if you require any help in installing any software please attend this session.


Intended Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand what a programming language is.
  • Know how to execute instructions or commands in Python.
  • Have the skills to create a simple Python script.
  • Feel more confident to embark on your programming journey!
