Securities lending is an accepted practice in almost every country that has an established capital market. Indeed, index providers often require a market to include short selling and securities lending in order for it to be categorised as developed. The practice is now acknowledged by regulators around the world as an important part of the capital markets. According to the most recent ISLA Market Report, approximately 20 trillion euro of assets available for loan and more than 2 trillion euro of equities and bonds on loan. Given the size and complexity of the market, it has been the focus for new regulations that will be implemented in 2020 and beyond.
