Learn the basics of setting up and using a sewing machine in this friendly, hands-on beginner workshop.

Are you thinking about buying your first sewing machine but aren’t sure sewing is “your thing”? Or do you already own a machine but lack confidence using it? This workshop is the perfect place to start!

In this session, you will be guided step-by-step through the essential functions of a sewing machine. You’ll learn how to set it up, thread it correctly, and begin sewing with confidence.

You will use one of our Janome sewing machines, or you may bring your own (please let us know in advance).

With small class sizes (maximum 8 participants), you’ll receive plenty of individual support and have the opportunity to ask questions throughout the session.

Children aged 12+ are welcome (under 16s must be accompanied by a paying adult)

What You Will Learn

During the workshop you will cover:

  • Setting up a sewing machine
  • Parts of the sewing machine and their functions
  • Threading the machine
  • Winding a bobbin
  • Changing needles
  • Stitch selection
  • Adjusting stitch length and width
  • Understanding and adjusting tension
  • Sewing straight lines and pivoting corners

By the end of the session, you’ll feel confident to use your sewing machine at home.

What’s Included

  • Use of a Janome sewing machine
  • Fabrics, threads, scissors and all sewing equipment
  • Expert tuition and hands-on guidance

What to Bring

  • Glasses for close-up work (if required)
  • If bringing your own machine:
    • Sewing machine
    • Foot pedal
    • Power cord
    • Manual (if available)
