Overview

Introduction to Smocking

Join us for a fun workshop on hand-smocking.

Smocking is an embroidery technique that uses small stitches to gather fabric. Historically, it served both decorative and practical purposes, as the gathered fabric allows for flexibility, making it perfect for necklines and cuffs.

In this introductory workshop, we will explore ways to use this centuries-old embroidery technique in a modern context. You will learn basic honeycomb smocking and how to apply the techniques to your own designs.

This class is perfect for anyone who enjoys hand sewing.

Please bring to the first session:

  • 2 metres of fabric (calico, canvas or actual fabric for your garment)
  • Thread & sewing needle
  • Scissors
  • Tailor's chalk
  • Quilting ruler or grading ruler
