Introduction to Vibration Testing

The Sheffield Innovation Programme (SIP) allows small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) from across the Sheffield City Region to access academic expertise, facilities and resources to support and develop business growth.Academic experts with a range of skills and knowledge will work collaboratively with your business to understand and recommend ways forward, deliver innovation support and forge productive partnerships. This can be through bespoke consultancy working with academic experts on specified projects or attending industry focussed workshops.

Sheffield Innovation Programme

The Structural Dynamics Laboratory for Verification and Validation (LVV) at the University of Sheffield is a major new acoustics and vibration testing facility.  The facility  will provide a unique research offering to academia and industry. In addition to allowing dynamic testing of full-scale structures in ambient laboratory conditions.
This 12-hour course will cover basic single-degree-of-freedom vibrations, introducing the ideas of natural frequencies, dampings and resonance and will involve some laboratory demonstrations. It will cover multi-degree-of-freedom systems in an intuitive manner, avoiding the use of matrix eigenvalues, but explaining the concept of a mode shape. Some revision of basic engineering mathematics will be given, but the attendees should have a working knowledge of calculus up to elementary differential equations.
Businesses based in the Sheffield city region are eligible to attend.

13:00-15:00  Single-degree-of-freedom vibrations, ideas of resonance
15:00-18:00  Frequencies and mode shapes (lab demo on modal analysis)
Day 2: Friday 2nd June - practical based
10:00-12:00  Lab demonstration
12:00-13:00  Networking lunch
13:00-15:00  Problem / tutorial classes
