Title:

Investigating the mechanisms of ageing with body composition, functional strength, metabolism, and insulin resistance: development of a cellular model

Summary:

Ageing is associated with decreased muscle mass, strength and quality and an increase in fat mass leading to dysregulated metabolism and elevated disease risk. Insulin resistance is the precursor to type 2 diabetes, however, the mechanisms linking the age-related unfavourable changes in body composition with insulin resistance are unclear, hindering intervention development. Muscle cells can be grown and studied in the lab using serum from young and old populations and may reveal such mechanisms. This study sought to investigate ageing’s mechanistic links with body composition, and metabolic dysregulation, and assess the impact of different age group’s serum on muscle cell function and metabolism.
