INVITATION TO PERFORMANCE
LIVING AFTERWARDS: A PERFORMANCE OF MOVING FORWARD
Humm Collective x Kirsten Grinstead presents:
LIVING AFTERWARDS: A PERFORMANCE OF MOVING FORWARD
Living Afterwards is this:
Fridge magnet poetry. Echoes. Ghosts in video. Memory. Being present in the past/present/future. A shared poem. A story you heard from a friend who heard it from their cousin. Your favourite page in your favourite book. Hard sweets in coat pockets.
Living Afterwards is this:
An invitation for the spectator to fill in the blanks.
An invitation for the spectator to sit with me and be present.
An invitation for the spectator to share a piece of their day with me.
An invitation to breathe in and breathe out.
An invitation for the spectator to be met where they are.
In practice, Living Afterwards is this:
Me, reading my favourite book. Some chairs and a table. Some photographs taken by me and my grandfather. An invitation to spectators to join me, if they want to, to share a story or write a poem or look through my pictures or play their favourite song or let me read to them or just breathe with me. The instructions will be clear in the moment. An endurance performance for me and a challenge for spectators to give themselves over. There should be a singular large spiral or many smaller spirals. There should be a responsibility on me to create a calm atmosphere. There might be crying. There might be joy. There will be silence. A lot of it. There will be a clear start and end to each spectator’s moment in the piece. I will smile and be reassuring. I will hold space for the spectators and let them move me. I can be emotionally moved if the opportunity arises. I can walk away if I need to.
