Iris Murdoch Centenary Readings and Panel Discussion

Join The Second Shelf and VINTAGE to celebrate the latter’s re-issue of six of the British novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch’s greatest and most timeless novels. This summer VINTAGE is celebrating great books by women. Revisit your favourites, discover new writers and fill your bookshelf and your summer with women’s voices. Published to commemorate Murdoch's centenary, these special editions feature new introductions by some of today’s best writers: Bidisha, Garth Greenwell, Sophie Hannah, Daisy Johnson, Charlotte Mendelson, and Sarah Perry.The event will feature short readings from Murdoch’s novels, followed by a panel discussion in which The Second Shelf’s Managing Editor Lucy Scholes will be joined by broadcaster, critic and journalist Bidisha, Man Booker Prize shortlistee Daisy Johnson, and Man Booker and Baileys Women’s Prize longlistee Charlotte Mendelson, after which there will be an audience Q&amp;A.Funny, subversive, fearless and fiercely intelligent, Murdoch (1919-1999) was one of the great writers of the twentieth century.Daisy Johnson was born in 1990. In 2018 she became the youngest writer ever to be shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize with her novel Everything Under. She is the winner of the Harper's Bazaar Short Story Prize, the A.M. Heath Prize and the Edge Hill Short Story Prize. She currently lives in Oxford by the river. Bidisha is a writer, broadcaster and film-maker. She is a Trustee of the Booker Prize Foundation, looking after the UK's most prestigious prise for prose fiction in English and in translation, and is also a Trustee of the Forward Arts Foundation, looking after the UK's most exciting prizes for contemporary poetry, the Forward Prizes. Her most recent book is Asylum and Exile: Hidden Voices (2015) and her first film as a director/actor, An Impossible Poison(2017), has been highly critically acclaimed and selected for numerous film festivals internationally. She presented Radio 4's Archve on Four documentary about Iris Murdoch, An Official Iris. Charlotte Mendelson’s most recent novel, Almost English, was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize and the Baileys Women's Prize for Fiction. When We Were Bad was shortlisted for the Orange Prize for Fiction. Her second novel, Daughters of Jerusalem, won both the Somerset Maugham Award and the John Llewellyn Rhys Prize. She is also the author of Rhapsody in Green, her memoir of gardening obsession, and is the Gardening Correspondent for the New Yorker.
