Is Fashion's Future Secondhand?Secondhand fashion is on trend. High streets, that were abandoned by mainstream fashion brands, are being recolonised by charity stores and curated resale boutiques, and social media is full of vintage resellers sharing their thrifted hauls. The British Fashion Council has gone on the record saying that there are already enough clothes in existence to dress the next six generations and a recent ThredUp Resale Report predicts secondhand revenues globally will almost double by 2027. This panel discussion will explore whether that means fashion's future is going to be secondhand? And whether that be a good thing for people and the planet?Research by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation says extending the worn life of clothes through multiple ownership cycles could halve an individual item's lifetime carbon emissions, and for consumers, shopping secondhand instead of new will reduce their personal carbon footprint. But the predicted exponential increases in secondhand shopping will only start to reduce the fashion industry's overall carbon emissions if preloved purchases actually displace new purchases, and fashion brands start making fewer new clothes. Is that possible?Join a panel of experts, all of whom are committed to reducing overconsumption and challenging throwaway fashion, as they discuss the future of the secondhand market and its potential to be a lever for positive changes in our wardrobes, our lives and the fashion industry's overall environmental impact. Panellists:Anna Kilpatrick started the Instagram account @not.needing.new to document her exclusive use of secondhand clothing and homeware over the past twelve years as a single parent on a very limited budget. She is very interested in ideas around satiation and in finding the joy in realising what is enough.
