Derby Arboretum

	Jane Loudon was born into a middle class family originating from Gloucestershire and Warwickshire. 	Her father did not leave her with a large fortune therefore she went to London were she made a living as a female writer. 	Her books included one of the first science fiction novels, The Mummy. 	She married the famous garden designer John Claudius Loudon and they worked on Derby Arboretum. 	The talk will focus on Jane's contributions to gardening through her publications and input to the design of the Arboretum and the relationship to the very influential Strutts, who stayed life-long friends.
