Event description

Description

This event is part of the Asia House Bagri Foundation Literature Festival 2018. #AsiaLitFest

Jeffrey Archer, one of the world’s bestselling authors (275 million copies worldwide) will be joined by Abir Mukherjee, winner of the 2017 CWA Historical Dagger Award and rising crime fiction star. The two will be discussing their approaches to writing, how they craft their characters and what they consider to be the key components of thrilling plotlines.

The two authors will also be sharing their passion for India. Archer has visited the country over a dozen times, often on extensive Indian book tours where he sees hundreds, if not thousands of fans turning out in force to hear him speak. He has even used the country as a source for his plotlines with eight chapters of Cometh the Hour and his short story Caste-Off from And Thereby Hangs A Tale being set in the country.

Mukerjee grew up in the west of Scotland and is the child of immigrants from India who came to the UK in the sixties. His life has consequently been shaped by both cultures. Mukherjee’s ‘Captain Wyndham’ series is set in 1920s Calcutta, against the backdrop of the British Raj – a period that the author feels has been largely forgotten or mischaracterised.

This event coincides with the publication of Archer’s highly anticipated latest book Heads You Win – his first novel in 2 years and his first stand-alone novel in a decade.

Mukherjee’s third novel in his series, Smoke and Ashes was released in June this year to rave reviews.

Both authors will be signing their books after the talk.

About Jeffrey Archer

Jeffrey Archer, whose novels and short stories include Kane and Abel, A Prisoner of Birth and The Clifton Chronicles Cat O’ Nine Tales, has topped the bestseller lists around the world, with sales of over 275 million copies. He is the only author ever to have been a number one bestseller in fiction (nineteen times), short stories (four times) and non-fiction (The Prison Diaries). The author is a member of the House of Lords, and is married to Dame Mary Archer, and they have two sons, two grandsons and a granddaughter.

About Abir Mukherjee

Abir Mukherjee grew up in the west of Scotland. At the age of fifteen, his best friend made him read Gorky Park and he’s been a fan of crime fiction ever since. The child of immigrants from India, A Rising Man, his debut novel, was inspired by a desire to learn more about a crucial period in Anglo-Indian history that seems to have been almost forgotten. It won the Harvill Secker/Daily Telegraph crime writing competition and became the first in a series starring Captain Sam Wyndham and ‘Surrender-not’ Banerjee. Abir lives in London with his wife and two sons.
