Symposium to celebrate the centenary of painter Joan Eardley through the eyes of some of Scotland's top art students + very special guests

We warmly welcome you to join us at the Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design (DJCAD) at the University of Dundee (online) in celebrating the Centenary of Joan Eardley’s birth through the eyes of some of Scotland’s top art students, DJCAD staff , and some very special guests. We are part of the official celebrations for Eardley&#x27;s centenary (#Eardley100) through the Scottish Women in the Arts Research Network (SWARN) and are also delighted to announce two keynote speakers for the event:- Alice Strang, Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the National Galleries of Scotland. She was made a Saltire Society Outstanding Woman of Scotland for her leadership of the 2015 Modern Scottish Women: Painters and Sculptors 1885-1965 project. More recently she was responsible for Monster Chetwynd’s Prolific Potato of 2019, the first piece of performance art to be commissioned by the National Galleries of Scotland and was a curatorial partner on the Paula Rego: Obedience and Defiance touring exhibition of 2019-21. Alice&#x27;s paper is entitled: &#x27;From the Highlands to Hampshire: Collecting Joan Eardley&#x27;.-Anna King, DJCAD alumni, an award-winning painter with an outstanding body of work, and former artist-in-residence at Joan Eardley&#x27;s Catterline studio. Anna was born in Shetland in 1984 before moving to the Scottish Borders at the age of 4. She studied Fine Art at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, graduating in 2005 with a sell-out degree show. Awards include the inaugural Jolomo Lloyds TSB Landscape Award and the Anna Miller Scholarship. Anna has undertaken residencies in Catterline, working in Joan Eardley’s former studio. Anna&#x27;s paper is titled &#x27;Working in Eardley&#x27;s Studio: Works from Catterline and Beyond&#x27;.DJCAD will present Joan Eardley has she has never been seen before, bringing new and vibrant conversations to an oeuvre of work created between 1940-1963. With a focus on the work created at nearby Catterline, Eardley’s evolving legacy has inspired a new generation of artists to create work through film, installation, textiles and paint. Join some of Scotland’s top art students as they prepare for their degree shows, presenting their thoughts on Eardley’s work and how it relates to their own practices. The event is organised by INGEAR at DJCAD (Intersectional Gender Equality in the Arts Research), supporting marginalised artists and promoting better equalities in the artworld. Special guests Elinor Olisa Barikor, London Art Dealer, founding member of the Association of Women Art Dealers, supporter of new graduates and emerging artists. Elinor&#x27;s paper is entitled: &#x27;The Past Decade of Art Online&#x27;.Helen Tookey, Academic and award-winning poet, who has based a recent body of work on Joan Eardley&#x27;s artwork. Helen&#x27;s paper is entitled: &#x27;Responding as a Poet to Joan Eardley&#x27;s Landscape Paintings&#x27;Judith Glover, Ceramicist, whose practice responds to Joan Eardley&#x27;s Catterline seascapes. Judith&#x27;s paper is entitled: &#x27;Responding in Clay to Joan Eardley&#x27;s Seascapes&#x27;.Ayshea Ahmed, Author, Illustrator and Artist, on a mission to uncover and promote the lives of lesser-known, often overlooked artists, and about to launch her new book about the life of Joan Eardley. Ayshea&#x27;s paper is entitled: &#x27;A Wild and Beautiful Art: the Life of Joan Eardley&#x27;.Selected DJCAD student presentersChenoa Beedie, graduating Contemporary Art Practice (CAP) student, In-GEAR director, and student Director of EDI at DJCAD. Chenoa&#x27;s paper is entitled: &#x27;Eardley, Identity, and our Ties to Scot/Land&#x27;.Cat Dunn, Doctoral Candidate, and PhD In-GEAR director. Cat&#x27;s paper is entitled &#x27;Marginalised Groups through Eardley&#x27;s Glasgow Works&#x27;.Lauren-Marie Kennedy, CAP student. Lauren-Marie&#x27;s paper is entitled &#x27;Eardley and her Fellow Earthlings&#x27;.Ruby Leeson, graduating CAP student. Ruby&#x27;s paper is entitled &#x27;Eardley, Sculpture, and Local Landscape&#x27;.Tilda Williams-Kelly, graduating CAP student. Tilda&#x27;s paper is entitled &#x27;Up Close and Personal in the Archive with Eardley&#x27;s Painting&#x27;.Kate Wilson, graduating CAP student. Kate&#x27;s paper is titled &#x27;Eardley, Aberdeenshire and Doric Dialect: Language and our Ties to Place&#x27;. DJCAD staff presentersHelen Gorrill.
