John Halstead Memorial Lecture 2025

Professor Peter Gurney will deliver a lecture on 'The Chartist Revolution'

Professor Peter Gurney will deliver the fourth John L. Halstead Memorial Lecture at the John Rylands Library, Deansgate, Manchester, on Saturday 14 June 2025 at 2pm. The lecture is held annually in memory of the late John Halstead, who was among the earliest members of the Society for the Study of Labour History and served in a variety of posts over many decades, including as editor of Labour History Review and Vice-President.

Peter Gurney is Professor of History at the University of Essex, and co-editor of Labour History Review. His most recent book (with Matthew Grant and Joel Morley) is National Service Life Stories: masculinity, class, and the memory of conscription in Britain (Oxford University Press, 2025).

The annual general meeting of the Society will take place in the morning of the same day at the same venue. Information on the AGM will be sent to SSLH members. Fuller details of the lecture will follow in due course.
