Historian Jonn Elledge returns to Foyles for a night of conversation and historical insight as we celebrate the paperback release of hisFoyles Book of the Year shortlisted, A History of the World in 47 Borders, with a conversation chaired by Dorian Lynskey.
People have been drawing lines on maps for as long as there have been maps to draw on. Sometimes rooted in physical geography, sometimes entirely arbitrary, by telling the stories of these borders Elledge explores how political identities are shaped and why the world looks the way it does.
Jonn Elledge is a New Statesman columnist, a regular on the podcasts Paper Cuts and Oh God, What Now? and a frequent contributor to the Big Issue, the Guardian, and assorted other publications. He was previously an assistant editor at the New Statesman, where he created and ran its urbanism-focused City-Metric site, spending six happy years writing about cities, maps and borders and hosting the Skylines podcast. He has written three books, as well as over two-hundred editions of the Newsletter of (Not Quite) Everything. He lives in London.
Dorian Lynskey writes about music, film, books and politics for publications including The Guardian, The Observer, the New Statesman, GQ, Billboard, Empire, and Mojo. His first book was 33 Revolutions Per Minute: A History of Protest Songs. His second book, The Ministry of Truth: A Biography of George Orwell's 1984, was longlisted for both the Baillie Gifford Prize and the Orwell Prize. His latest book, Everything Must Go, was released in 2024. He hosts the podcasts 'Origin Story' and 'Oh God, What Now?'.
