Lab. Talks+ Session 1 On Dark Matter
Fri 21 April 2017, 14:00 – 17:30 BST
Talks, discussions, interactions and live weblinks.
Lab. Talks+ is an event happening over 3 sessions - You can come for one, or stay for all three for full art/science immersion. Each event has different speakers to introduce you to different perspectives and ideas surrounding dark matter.
In Session 1 - Explore Dark Matter with particle astrophysicist Dr. Chamkaur Ghag. Chair of Dark Matter UK, LZ-UK collaboration’s Outreach Officer and lecturer at UCL, Dr. Ghag's research focuses on conducting cutting edge experiments that look for rare signatures from physics processes that would shed light on some of the greatest unsolved mysteries of the Universe - in particular, what it is made of. Most of the matter in the Universe is an unknown form of exotic ‘Dark Matter‘ that we know is present from its gravitational influence, but has never been directly observed. Incredibly, all the ‘regular’ matter that we are used to, that makes up all we see around us, including ourselves, only makes up a tiny 4% of our Universe.
Artist Libby Heaney will run a workshop where we will explore the relationship between dark matter and quantum physics through collaborative weaving and improvised story-telling.
Meet the scientists underground via live weblink for a remote tour of Boulby Underground Laboratory 1100m below ground on the North East coast of England. Operated by the UK's Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) with the support of the Boulby mine owners Cleveland Potash Ltd. It is one of just a handful of facilities world-wide suitable for hosting ultra-low background and deep underground science projects. Boulby is a special place for science - 'a quiet place in the Universe' - where studies can be carried out almost entirely free of interference from natural background radiation. Studies underway at Boulby range from the search for Dark Matter in the Universe, to studies of cosmic rays and climate, astrobiology and life in extreme environments, development of techniques for deep 3D geological monitoring and studies of radioactivity in the environment.
Complimentary refreshments will be served between 5.30 - 6.30pm
