Our latest Lake District tour event takes us to Buttermere for the first time and two days of classic hikes across legendary fells

I’d like to extend another warm welcome to you all ahead of our latest Freshwalks Tour event in the Lake District.

Nestled among towering fells and mirrored waters, Buttermere is a place of rare, quiet beauty that captures the very soul of the Lake District. Its tranquil lake, encircled by dramatic peaks like Haystacks and Fleetwith Pike, offers a sense of harmony between land and water that feels timeless and restorative.

Gentle paths invite unhurried walks, while changing light and weather lend the landscape an ever-renewing character.

Free from crowds and commercial bustle, Buttermere will reward Freshwalkers with stillness, grandeur, and a deep, lingering sense of peace and relaxation.

Thursday 16 April 2026 (option 1)

BUTTERMERE & HAYSTACKS
Buttermere - Scarth Gap - Haystacks - Buttermere

Distance: 12.5km / Ascent: 653m
Estimated time: 4.5-5 hours
Grade: Hard

This shorter hike begins in Buttermere, heading steadily uphill through Scarth Gap towards the rugged summit of Haystacks. The route offers dramatic views across the surrounding fells and the beauty of Buttermere and Crummock Water below. After exploring the rocky top and nearby tarns, the trail descends to the lakeshore. An anti-clockwise loop then follows the peaceful woodland and shoreline paths around Buttermere, returning to the starting point with a mix of ascent, scenery, and relaxing lakeside walking.

BUTTERMERE CIRCULAR
Buttermere - Red Pike - High Stile - High Crag - Haystacks - Fleetwith Pike - Buttermere

Distance: 17km / Ascent: 1320m
Estimated time: 7-7.5 hours
Grade: Challenging

This challenging circular hike from Buttermere offers dramatic Lake District scenery. The route climbs steeply to Red Pike before following the rugged ridge over High Stile and High Crag, with sweeping views of Crummock Water and surrounding fells. Descending toward the iconic, rocky landscape of Haystacks, hikers pass near Innominate Tarn, a favourite of Alfred Wainwright. The trail then heads over Fleetwith Pike, finishing with a rewarding descent back into peaceful Buttermere.

LOWESWATER & CRUMMOCK
Buttermere - Dale How - Loweswater - Buttermere

Distance: 14km / Ascent: 342m
Estimated time: 4-4.5 hours
Grade: Medium

This pleasant ramble begins in the peaceful village of Buttermere and follows a mainly flat route around the scenic edges of Crummock Water. After a gentle initial climb up Dale How, walkers are treated to wide views of the surrounding fells before descending to lakeside paths. The trail continues north towards Loweswater, where the welcoming Kirkstile Inn offers the perfect halfway rest. The loop then returns along quiet tracks, framed by April’s fresh greenery and tranquil waters.
