Presenters: <a href="https://www.nottingham.ac.uk/clas/people/nicola.mclelland" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Prof. Nicola McLelland</a>, <a href="https://www.kcl.ac.uk/people/dr-simon-coffey" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Simon Coffey</a>, and <a href="https://lacity.academia.edu/LinaFisher" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Lina Fisher</a>This session presents an overview of newly developed training materials aimed at teachers, trainees, and teacher educators. The materials make explicit the relevance of the history of language learning and teaching to decisions and practices today. Each of the units we have developed consists of a video with accompanying instructor and participant handbooks for a two-to three-hour training session. At this event we will present three key themes: <ul><li>differentiation and diversity</li><li>culture, and </li><li>grammar</li></ul>Nicola McLelland is Professor of German and History of Linguistics at the University of Nottingham. Her two most recent books are German Through English Eyes. The history of teaching and learning German in England, 1500-2000 (Harrassowitz, 2015, <a href="https://www.harrassowitz-verlag.de/titel_832.ahtml" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">open access</a>) and Teaching and Learning Foreign Languages. A history of language education, assessment and policy in Britain (Routledge, 2017). She was co-editor, with Richard Smith, of a History of Language Learning and Teaching in 3 vols. (published in 2018 with Legenda, reprinted in paperback in 2020), and of two special issues on the history of language education in Europe, both fully open access, <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/ylhi20/57/1" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Building the History of Language Learning and Teaching</a> (= Language &amp; History 57.1, 2014) and <a href="https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/09571736.2017.1382051" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Histories of language learning and teaching in Europe</a> (= The Language Learning Journal 46.1, 2018).Simon Coffey is Senior Lecturer in Modern Languages Education at King’s College London, where he is Programme Director of the PGCE. His scholarship revolves around modern languages teaching in schools and he is currently researching the history of French teaching and learning in England. His publications include the popular Modern Foreign Languages 5-11: A Teacher’s Guide (co-authored, 3rd Edition, 2017, Routledge) and edited volumes such as New Directions for Research in Modern Languages Education (co-edited, 2018, Routledge), and The History of Grammar in Foreign Language Teaching (2020, Amsterdam University Press). The overarching aim of his work is to broaden people’s conception of what learning a language can mean, as well of course as to promote enjoyment of language learning. Lina Fisher is Impact Research Fellow at the University of Nottingham. She previously taught Translation Studies at the University of Hull and Literary Translation at the University of East Anglia. She was co-editor, with Jean Boase-Beier and Hiroko Furukawa, of The Palgrave Handbook of Literary Translation (2018).------------------------------------------------------------------------------Please note that the event will be hosted on Zoom.
