Laura Cole + Ember String Quartet/ Simeon Walker

Laura Cole is a composer, pianist and writer based in Leeds. Laura’s second solo double album, Sky Chord/ Haptic Space, which features her arrangements of Ron Caines’ compositions for piano and string quartet, was released on the Discus label in 2025. Laura is thrilled to be playing at the Attic, alongside a set by the wonderful Simeon Walker; this gig represents the album launch for Sky Chord/Haptic Space. Laura will be playing arrangements from the album for this event, alongside the wonderful Ember string quartet (Gemma Bass, Seth Bennett, Aby Vulliamy, Semay Wu).
Gemma Bass is a violinist, composer, improviser and project leader based in Manchester UK. She is a member of Manchester Camerata, the Tulchinskaya Quartet and the experimental piano trio, Little Pillars. She is passionate about free, exploratory and performer-led music-making, particularly in a small-group setting, and has released 3 albums of her own music on Efpi records - Missing Pieces, parts 1, 2 and 3.
Seth Bennett is an improvising double bassist living in Dundee, and working internationally. His working life finds him in settings as diverse as straightahead jazz, contemporary composition, free improvisation and heavy riffs, as a freelancer, and in bands such as Sloth Racket, New String Collective and Moonmot.
Aby Vulliamy is a Music Therapist and multi-instrumentalist (she sings and plays viola, piano, accordion, musical saw, flute and recorders) who features on more than 50 albums recorded over the last 20 years as well as collaborating and performing in a wide range of ensembles. In October 2018 Aby released her first solo album, Spin Cycle, a collection of piano-based songs reflecting on her experience of motherhood.
Semay Wu is a Scottish-based composer, improviser, cellist and sound/media artist.
Semay has released four solo albums: Raspberry Hotel (Akashic Records, 2022), Sharmanka & Unsteady Stones (scatterArchive, 2023 & 2024),
with a self-released CD version of Unsteady Stones, including The Spinal Cactus #001 (2024).

Leeds-based pianist and composer Simeon Walker is a versatile and prolific artist who has quickly established himself as a leading voice in the contemporary modern classical scene. His work is regularly broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and Classic FM.
A seasoned live performer, Walker tours extensively across the UK and Europe and has supported high-profile artists including Neil Cowley, Submotion Orchestra, Erland Cooper and LYR.
A sought-after collaborator, Simeon works across genres as a session musician and composer, contributing to numerous projects spanning music, art, and interdisciplinary commissions. He is also a passionate advocate for live music, founding Brudenell Piano Sessions in 2018, and continuing to curate the long-running Leeds series celebrating original piano-centred work.
With a background in classical music and a deep appreciation for jazz, ambient and experimental forms, Simeon’s creative output is wide-ranging and exploratory.
