A research-in-progress session to discuss current research being conducted in the department.

Theme: Applying Doreen Massey’s theories of place and space – case studies from Pondicherry, India and contemporary Basque fiction. 

Ian’s contribution focuses on the gridiron urban morphology of Pondicherry’s boulevard town core, originating in seventeen-century Dutch plans – see image. For Space , Doreen Massey’s 2005 study of the ramifications of space that retains a notion of place, is invaluable for understanding how spatial networks adjacent to this core are essential to wider understanding of Pondicherry as a multilingual ‘episodic city’. 
 Thomas will discuss the significance of the home as a place of memory in Karmele Jaio's 2019 novel Aitaren etxea (La casa del padre). In Space, Place and Gender Massey argues against a masculinist notion of place as bounded and stable, proposing instead that we rethink place in terms of its social relations and, specifically, the concept of power geometry. Using these ideas, Thomas will explore how, in Jaio's novel, the male narrator's memory of his past is reshaped by a return to his childhood home that forces him to reckon with the gender inequality of the family unit, both past and present. Speakers:Ian is a Senior Lecturer in LCF and is currently working on two AHRC- and one British Council applied heritage research projects in West Bengal, India. Thomas is a third-year PhD candidate at the University of Liverpool. His research focuses on the representation of memory and place in contemporary Basque fiction.
