There are a variety of different approaches to interdisciplinary and interprofessional education and this session aims to describe some of the approaches employed in FBMH. Interdisciplinary and interprofessional education have the potential to enhance the efficiency of teaching by promoting the sharing of expertise and resources between programmes. They can contribute to achieving the goals set out in the Manchester Matrix, which have the potential for a positive impact on the employability of graduates.

o Interdisciplinary education allows a large number of degree programmes to be offered in a cost effective way. It allows greater student choice within a programme. It is also a mechanism for introducing new programmes without having to recreate everything from scratch. Interdisciplinary education is associated with higher levels of student satisfaction.

o Interprofessional education is a priority for all accredited undergraduate programmes that lead or contribute to registration as a healthcare professional as it is either a requirement of the professional regulators or is a marker of good practice. Furthermore, there is a clear student demand for greater exposure to interprofessional education.

Delegates will leave with a good understanding of:

• To increase an awareness of different approaches to interdisciplinary and interprofessional education.
• To describe advantages of the different approaches to interdisciplinary and interprofessional education.
• To consider methods used to overcome challenges to interdisciplinary and interprofessional education.
• To describe how interdisciplinary and interprofessional education can support employability by achieving the goals set out in the Manchester Matrix.

The Academy for Education and Professional Development’s mission is “To ensure consistent high-quality development and delivery of educational programmes with student experience at their heart”. Academy events are open to all those who contribute to the development, delivery and management of FBMH undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing professional development programmes including staff from across the University, the Manchester Academic Health Science Centre and our NHS clinical education partners. The Pedagogy Seminar Series provides a forum to discuss research undertaken and/or pedagogy literature of interest.
