About this event

In a special live recording of the award-winning food podcast Lecker, host Lucy Dearlove meets Joké Bakare, the UK’s first Black female Michelin-starred chef in Christ Church on Brixton Road as part of the Festival of Encounters. Joké’s restaurant, Chishuru, is now located in Fitzrovia but its first site was in Brixton Market: the prize for self-taught Joké winning the Brixton Kitchen competition in 2020. In Brixton, the community and produce available in the market helped inform Chishuru’s singular approach to West African food; in this conversation, she shares more about the people, places and ingredients that have informed her cooking, from Kaduna, Nigeria to South London, including the church outside which her journey in food began.

Organized by

Organised by Van Gogh House London, the Festival of ENCOUNTERS is a free-to-attend, large-scale event, featuring up to 40 talks and other kinds of encounters, by artists, writers, activists, musicians and thinkers in venues across the northern end of Brixton. This includes not only Van Gogh House, but also galleries, parks and community centres and other exciting venues including non-traditional spaces such as cafes, and a co-op workshop space. The Festival is inspired by serendipitous encounters with interesting people in unexpected places, bringing together exciting voices, thoughts and ideas to and from Brixton.

Van Gogh House London is very grateful to Lambeth Council for their support in helping us bring this inaugural Festival of ENCOUNTERS to fruition.
