LECTURE: Napoleon's Egypt

Today Bolton Archaeology and Egyptology Society is a group of people from Bolton and the surrounding areas who are interested and enthusiastic about Archaeology and Egyptology. We meet formally once a month where we have a range of lectures from both well established and up-and-coming academics and amateurs. The society welcomes people of all ages and abilities and there is no need to be a member to come to hear a lecture.

Egyptologist Hazel McGuinness explores the cultural revolution ignited by Napoleon's invasion of Egypt

Title"Napoleon's Egypt" DescriptionThis month we welcome back Hazel McGuinness who will look at Napoleon's Egypt. Napoleon's invasion of Egypt was a military disaster, yet it ignited a cultural revolution. In its wake came a wave of Egyptomania, and the work of savants laid the foundations of modern Egyptology. This talk explores the drama, the discoveries, and the unexpected legacy of a campaign that changed how the world saw ancient Egypt. Hazel is the secretary of Wigan's Horus Egyptology Society and the Egypt Exploration Society's Local Ambassador for Wigan. She has a particular interest in ancient Egyptian language and loves delving into the history and writing of ancient Egypt.
