Event description

Description

Over the last six months, place-based research project Leith Creative has been engaging with Leithers, asking the simple question ‘What would you do to make Leith better?’ Co-delivered by Morvern Cunningham (LeithLate) and Duncan Bremner (Citizen Curator), alongside creative partners Biomorphis, HERE + NOW and Lateral North, Leith Creative has appeared at and facilitated 18 public engagement events in a six month timeframe, reaching over 2000 people who live and/or work in the Leith area. Now we’d like you to join us, as we feedback on the information that we’ve gathered through all our research and conversations to date.

Leith Creative will be producing a document in order to present the key information and we have gathered from our research. The Leith Blueprint will highlight assets and challenges in the area, based on what the people of Leith have told us is important to them. Furthermore, the document will highlight a number of areas for action in Leith’s future development, stemming directly from the information gathered to date. Copies of the Leith Blueprint will be available at the event. Please contact us if you would like a copy or copies sent out to you.

The reporting event will take place in Custom Lane, a collaborative centre for design and making in the heart of the Leith community. Conceived by GRAS design studio, Custom Lane occupies the former cruiser store behind Custom House and houses a café, shop, gallery, event space and workshop on the ground floor, with workspace upstairs. The venue is fully accessible with access down a closed cobbled street, ramp access and an accessible toilet.

There will also be an opportunity to visit DOK Artist Space after the event, a grassroots arts initiative currently situated in what is locally known as ‘the steel shed’ to the right of Ocean Terminal. The building, a former paint shed constructed with rivets and built by apprentices, now represents the last vestige of Henry Robbs shipyard company which once dominated the area. The site that the steel shed occupies is earmarked for development as a whisky distillery; the company behind the development has committed to careful deconstruction of the shed to allow for its future relocation.

Leith Creative's People & Places: Make Leith Better project is co-delivered LeithLate and Citizen Curator. The project is supported by the Scottish Government, Creative Scotland and the City of Edinburgh Council.

Thanks to the City of Edinburgh Council for supporting this event.
