Naomi Alexander is the Artistic Director and Co-CEO of Brighton People's Theatre 3 days a week.The rest of the time she works freelance for a range of cultural organisations which in recent years have included Battersea Arts Centre, Old Vic New Voices, Farnham Maltings, Creative Crawley  and The Barbican.She is a Clore Fellow for Theatre and is currently carrying out AHRC/Clore Fellowship funded research into leadership in co-created arts practice.

This research workshop is for professional artists to explore leadership qualities, skills & responsibilities in co-created arts practice.

Implicit within the upbeat vernacular of the Arts Council’s new 10-year strategy, Let’s Create, is an assumption that co-creation is a joyful process, and that we know how to do it. Is this the reality? When co-creation takes place between professional artists and non-professional artists there are a myriad of tensions and power imbalances at play. How do people involved navigate these tensions and power imbalances in order to co-create? How does leadership work in this context?I want to discover the answers to these questions and produce accessible resources for people leading co-creation processes, so that the creative journey can be more fulfilling for everyone involved. In this workshop for professional artists, we will be exploring what leadership in co-created practice looks like. How do you know when it is working? What are the ideal skills, qualities and responsibilities that a leader should hold when co-creating with non-professional artists?The workshop forms part of an Arts and Humanities Research Council and Clore Leadership funded research programme enquiring into leadership in co-created arts practice. It will be facilitated by Naomi Alexander, a Clore Fellow for Theatre who is running this research under the supervision of Dr Leila Jancovich, Director of Research and Innovation, School of Performance and Cultural Industries, University of Leeds.If you work in the field of co-created arts and are interested in these questions please come along to this zoom and get involved. The zoom call will be recorded for research purposes but all contributions will be anonymised in the final resources which are produced.
