This SIG is intended to provide a forum for EAP practitioners to discuss, deepen their understanding of, and address concerns related to, social justice within and around EAP, whilst also broadening and strengthening the evidence-base of the impact that social justice initiatives can make in this field. Through bringing this often-sidelined area into the spotlight and examining the knowledge, skills and values that a social justice lens can contribute to EAP, this SIG aims to encourage more EAP students, practitioners and managers to take action and play their part in fulfilling the vision of the university as the “critic and conscience of society”.https://eap4socialjustice.net@EAPforSJ

EAP for Social Justice SIG (BALEAP)

Are you keen to join the dialogue about how race, racism and white privilege intersect with EAP?

As part of our bid to put Black Lives Matter on the agenda in EAP circles (please click <a href="https://eap4socialjustice.net/2020/08/12/eap-for-sj-sigs-black-lives-matter-statement/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">here</a> to read our BLM statement), this webinar aims to shine a spotlight on how race, racism and white privilege intersect with EAP. We will hear insights from two EAP practitioners with lived experience of this issue, focusing on the following areas*:Diversity perspectives in EAP - Henry James Robinson (EAP Tutor, University of Birmingham)When considering racial diversity in EAP, it is evident that the field is characterised by a lack of African-Caribbean educators. Those working in EAP contexts are usually on insecure contracts and are rarely raised up as positive examples. In these times of increased awareness about racial injustice, it is clear that the time for us to challenge this situation within EAP is long overdue. I hope this talk is an opportunity to do this through a discussion of diversity and decolonisation in EAP.Speaker bio: Henry James Robinson began his professional teaching career in his home city of Nottingham. His first teaching jobs abroad were in Poland, Russia, and Turkey; he worked with the British Council in South America, Africa, Europe, Central, and Asia. His first full-time English for Academic Purposes teaching experience was at a well-known Turkish University. He continued his EAP career with University College London for 5 years and has since worked in EAP for several other UK and foreign universities. What’s race got to do with EAP? - Lorraine Mighty (EAP Programme Manager for Foundation Pathways at the BIA, University of Birmingham)This talk explores issues of race and racism within the internationalisation of higher education and considers how these issues may manifest within the field of Teaching English for Academic Purposes (EAP). Drawing on critical and anti-racist pedagogies, it suggests ways in which we may reflect on and revise the content and teaching approach of EAP programmes to foster social justice. Speaker bio: Lorraine Mighty is EAP Programme Manager for Foundation Pathways at the Birmingham International Academy, University of Birmingham. She has taught English since 2007 and has worked for a variety of educational institutions in the UK and overseas. Lorraine is also a part-time PhD candidate in the School of Education at the University of Birmingham. Her research interests include the internationalisation of higher education, staff and students’ experiences of higher education, critical and inclusive pedagogy and academic identity. After these presentations, there will be an opportunity for questions and discussion. We intend for this webinar to encourage learning, reflection and, ultimately, action, because, as Angela Davis says, 'In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist.
