In this workshop, we aim to break the mould of giving talks on technical topics in order to improve retention for experts as well as general audiences. Topics includes key components of making your talk compelling, with special emphasis on making figures and choosing numbers to tell your story. The workshop will be interactive in nature and informal – come ready to learn and have some fun.

Biosketch

Christine Hrenya is a Professor of Chemical Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Her interests lie in the field of multiphase and solids flows, using a combination of theory, simulation, and experiments. Recent emphases of the research program include cohesive particles, multiphase flow instabilities, and gas-solid heat transfer. To date, her research program has resulted in over 110 journal papers and 130 invited lectures, and $13M in funding from the U. S. DOE, NSF, NASA, ACS and industry. Recent recognitions include being named an APS Fellow (2021), the 2020 AIChE Thomas-Baron Award, 2014 AIChE Lectureship Award in Fluidization and the 2013 University of Colorado Excellence in Teaching Award. Professor Hrenya currently serves as an Associate Editor for the AIChE Journal. She recently served as the Chair of the 2016 AIChE Annual Meeting, and has previously served as Chair of the 2006 Gordon Conference on Granular Flow (Oxford University). Recently, Professor Hrenya taught courses on the oral communication of science to academe as well as industry. In the greater community, Prof. Hrenya currently serves on the Board of Directors for The Traveling School, a Bozeman-based non-profit dedicated to empowering young women to ignite positive, global change via a place-based semester of high school.
