A Minorities in STEM symposium to promote careers, communication and engagement for researchers* from ethnic minority backgrounds

About this Event

* The symposium is aimed at final year undergraduate students and postgraduate researchers (including postdocs, early career researchers and lab research scientists) from science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine fields from ethnic minority backgrounds.

10.15 – 11.45am Navigating an academic career

From PhD to Professor, our panel of academics will discuss their route through STEM as researchers from minority ethnic backgrounds.

This session will explore how to reach diverse audiences and increase BAME representation in STEM activities through three interactive workshops.

2. Engaging with schools: Dr. Maria Ocampo-Hafalla, The Francis Crick Institute

3. Engaging with community groups: Sarah Cosgriff, Freelance Science Communicator & Trainer

2.00- 3.30pm Communicating through writing

In this session, the use of writing to craft engaging and compelling stories for journals, grants and articles will be explored through three interactive workshops.

1. Writing for journals: Dr. May Chiao & Dr. Mina Razzak, Chief Editors, Nature Research

2. Writing for grants: Heike Meiss, Grants Manager, The Francis Crick Institute

3. Writing for articles: Alok Jha, Science Correspondent, The Economist
