About this event

We've done one series of 4 workshops and are halfway through another at the Old Diorama Arts Centre. We have had tremendous feedback, the writers are enjoying it a lot, and many of them have returned. We are a lively lot. We continue to focus on Flash Fiction, with a view to participants contributing to ‘Flash Dances’, the new anthology to be published by Paradise Press. Flash Fiction attracts a lot of interest these days - tiny polished stories which create a complete world in miniature, in 600, 300 or even as few as 100 words. For new writers, the form of Flash Fiction is approachable and does not require nearly so much commitment as writing, say, a full-length novel. Nevertheless it is highly disciplined and every word has to tell. Participants will also have the chance to read their work at a series of library events, if they want, and to enter a Flash-writing competition judged by professional authors.

We do ask when people sign up that they commit to the whole series; also that they participate in a caring and constructive way. One of the purposes of this exercise is to create a safe and supportive space.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to pay anything?

No, the event is free?

Can you help me with writer's block?

Yes, we use memories, sensory experience, ideas and discussion to generate new material

Do we have to write about LGBT+ experience?

No, we are not prescriptive about choice of subjects. But we do ask for people to self-identify as being somewhere on the LGBT+ spectrum

How much commitment does it involve?

We ask people to commit to the whole series of workshops; to bring writing materials and to write in the class; to undertake a writing task during the week between classes; to participate equally and positively in class discussions. We do NOT ask people to read out work if they don't want to
