We represent library and information professionals from Northumberland, Gateshead, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, North and South Tyneside, Sunderland, Durham, Hartlepool, Darlington, Redcar and Cleveland, Middlesbrough and Stockton-on-Tees.

CILIP North East Member Network

CILIP North East invite you to a debate on user privacy in libraries held at the Mining Institute in Newcastle. The motion to be debated is: This house believes that protecting users' privacy in libraries should take precedence over any other demands on users' data.
 
Debate chair: Dr Biddy Casselden Biddy is a Senior Lecturer at Northumbria University, in addition to being a programme leader for the MA/MSc Information and Library Management DL course.  Prior to becoming an academic, Biddy worked in a variety of information management posts.
Proposing the motion:

<LI>Ian Clark Ian Clark is a subject librarian at the University of East London and a co-founder of Voices for the Library. Involved in the Radical Librarians Collective, he is active in encouraging awareness of privacy and intellectual issues in libraries and last year wrote a paper on the relationship between surveillance and the digital divide. </LI>
<LI>Alex Haydock Alex is a recent law graduate and continuing academic, specialising in technology and internet law. He currently acts as organiser for the Open Rights Group's local North East group, and helps to organise events teaching practical digital security with CryptoParty Newcastle. </LI>

<LI>Peter Dinsdale Peter is an experienced Data Protection Officer, currently working in the Information Security Team at Newcastle University. He is studying for an LLM in Information Rights Law and Practice at Northumbria University, with an interest in the legal and privacy implications of the use of big data in learning analytics in higher education. </LI>
</UL>
 
This debate is open to anyone interested in libraries and/or privacy.
 
CILIP North East members are invited to attend the group's AGM prior to the debate starting (while everyone else gets to admire the beautiful Nicholas Wood Library or sip on their drink a bit longer!)
