Outline
This workshop seeks to build capacity and share learnings on how the privacy and digital security of library staff and volunteers, as well as library users can be protected in the library environment. This session will outline existing surveillance powers, discuss privacy in the age of big data and share practical steps that everyone could take to improve their digital security and take control of their private information online. 
Target Audience
This half day hands-on workshop is aimed at library and IT support staff and volunteers in public, academic, school and specialist libraries. No specialist technical ability is required to participate but you should bring your own device.
Summary
This practical workshop, developed in partnership with the <A HREF="https://libraryfreedomproject.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Library Freedom Project,</A> and supported by CILIPS and SLIC is being offered as part of <A HREF="http://scottishpen.org/" TARGET="_blank" DATA-MSYS-CLICKTRACK="0" REL="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Scottish PEN’s</A> campaign to protect free expression in the digital age.
By the end of the workshop participants will:

Have an understanding of the legal implications of the Investigatory Powers Act for library services;
</LI>
<LI>
Have discussed privacy rights and responsibilities in the context of library and information services;
</LI>
<LI>
Be familiar with a range of digital tools that can be used to protect privacy;
</LI>
<LI>
Have tested and tried a range of free cybersecurity tools and services;
</LI>
<LI>
Have considered how to incorporate their learning into digital literacy training for library service users
</LI>
</UL>
There will be extra time available for those who have follow up questions.
Please note: This session is open to all library staff, volunteers, IT departments and representatives of the local council. It does not require any tech literacy and it caters for everyone, irrespective of background or prior experience. 
It is recommended that you bring with you a laptop and smart phone to ensure you can take part in the hands-on sessions contained in the workshop. Due to limited power points available in the venue, I would ask that you charge these devices prior to the session.
