Life Drawing + portrait tutorial
Accessible life drawing with focus on portraiture for all levels including beginner
A friendly life drawing group suitable for all levels, including beginners, led by experienced artist-teacher Rod Kitson. It has been running on Saturdays and Sundays since 2020.
The emphasis is on creating a welcoming, open environment for growth, with clear, helpful guidance from both a technical perspective and a mindful approach designed to encourage self-kindness.
Working from a live, nude model, the tutored sessions begin with short poses including some general drawing tips and suggestions. There are optional, tutor-led exercises of 1-2 minutes followed by 10mins drawings (Saturday) and 15-20 minute drawings (Sunday), with more individual, tailored help available if needed.
After a tea break (refreshments included in the price) the second half is one long pose (1hr on Saturday, 40mins Sunday). On Sundays, teacher Rod gives a short drawing demonstration, breaking down the structuring of a portrait at the start of the 40min pose.
It is all presented in an accessible format.
All materials including easels, paper, charcoal, pencils, chalk & coloured paper, and even a half-time cup of tea are provided for the price of £10.
Pay on the day with cash or card.
It is hosted by full-time artist Rod Kitson in his studio-gallery space in Surrey Quays, SE London. You can see his work at www.instagram.com/rodkitsonart
