Life in a Garrison Town: Story-gathering afternoon
Colchester has a long history as a ‘garrison town’. It has been an important site
for military bases since Roman times. Over the centuries Colchester has been
home to many different army units, as well as countless soldiers and their
families. Researchers at the National Army Museum in London and the University
of Essex are interested in hearing about what Colchester’s long association with
the military means to the city’s people today. We will be running an afternoon of
activities on Wednesday 7 May to record your personal histories, experiences,
and views of Colchester’s military identity as a garrison town.
The afternoon will include a talk on Exploring Colchester’s Army Heritage
from Dr Glyn Prysor, Assistant Director of the National Army Museum in
London and small group discussions, which will be recorded and anonymised.
There will also be tea and biscuits! Please do bring along any personal items that
might relate to your life in a garrison town, and that you would like to share with
us and talk about.
Any questions, please contact Professor Lucy Noakes, Director of the Centre for Public
History, University of Essex on l.noakes@essex.ac.uk
