From 1 February to 29 February, Central Saint Martins’ Digital Innovation Season will explore and celebrate creativity in the digital space. This platform offers public talks and workshops for CSM students.The 2024 edition will focus on ‘Planetary Sensing’. This takes a ‘planetary’ perspective related to the climate crisis, social impact, and learning, teaching and research that engage cutting edge technologies like AI, IoT, wearables, and spatial computing. Rather than imagining a schism between the local and the global, a planetary perspective considers the material conditions of the planet - and how the earth understands and communicates through arrays of satellites, sensors, swarms, and servers that influence geographies, climate, and societies.

<h3><strong>This event is for CSM Students only.</strong></h3><p><strong>Please note:</strong> due to limited places this workshop is open to applications -  you will be asked questions when you click 'Register'.</p><p>Your application will be reviewed by the DIS team, and we will email you with a response. We aim to notify you of our decision as promptly as possible.</p><h3>Rob Kesseler will introduce various microscopy techniques, present some of his research work on seeds, pollen and leaves pollutants analysis with X-Ray spectrometry, and will also talk through some research on plants' signals. </h3><h3>Students will be invited to collect biological samples, and will learn how to prepare samples, how to section plants, use stains, and consult databases, such as the pollen database. Students will have the opportunity to create beautiful digital imagery of the structure of plants, moss, germinating pollen, or plants cells' stomata 'breathing'.</h3>

<p><a href="http://www.robkesseler.co.uk/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Prof Rob Kesseler</a> is a visual artist and Emeritus Professor of Arts, Design &amp; Science at Central Saint Martins. For the past twenty years he has been using a range of complex microscopy processes to create multi-frame composite images of plant organs. He has collaborated with Kew Gardens, The John Innes Centre, MRC Cambridge and the Max Planck Institute. Recent projects include an award-winning series of books on Pollen, Seeds and Fruit, solo exhibitions in North America, Chile, Germany and Greece and a feature for the BBC on seeds and climate change. In 2010 Kesseler was Year of Biodiversity Fellow at the Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência. He is a Fellow of the Linnean Society and Ambassador for Royal Microscopical Society.<a href="https://www.instagram.com/studio_of_shem/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">

</a></p><p><a href="https://www.instagram.com/studio_of_shem/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Dr Shem Johnson </a>is the Specialist Technician at the Grow Lab, a fully equipped biological lab that caters to the staff and students of Central Saint Martins. He brings a cross-disciplinary approach to bridging the divide between art, design and science. He has an undergraduate degree from the University of Colorado at Boulder in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology, and a masters and PhD in biochemistry at the University of Geneva where he spent most of his time peering through microscopes at the marvels of cellular mechanics. <a href="https://graduateshowcase.arts.ac.uk/projects/274775/cover" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"></a></p>
