TheOxford Human Rights Festivalraises awareness of human rights through film screenings, poetry, music, theatre, talks, workshops, and exhibitions. Postgraduates and staff at the Centre for Development and Emergency Practice (CENDEP) founded the festival in 2003. Based within the School of Architecture at Oxford Brookes University, CENDEP continues to host the event today. An organising committee of students, staff, academics, and Oxford residents plans and delivers the festival. We collaborate with local groups, schools, NGOs, and international organisations to create engaging programmes.Each year, the student-led committee selects a central theme. Past themes include Resilience, Identity, Home, Movement, and NOW WHAT? These events have featured prominent speakers such as Scilla Elworthy, Ken Loach, Ziauddin Yousafzai, and Yasmeen Lari. Our exhibitions have showcased artists addressing displacement, belonging, and resistance. The Oxford Brookes University Faculty of Technology, Design and Environment (TDE) provides a small bursary. We rely on voluntary contributions of our committee and friends. We welcome grants and donations to support our funding and mission.The theme for 2026 is Breaking Free. We will explore freedom across generations, discrimination, gaps in human rights protection, and the impact of budget cuts in the humanitarian sector. These topics allow us to examine human rights through the lenses of gender, race, ability, class, and migration.

Ben Sharrock’s critically adored deadpan comedy-drama Limbo is a wry, funny and poignant cross-cultural satire that subtly sews together the hardship and hope of the refugee experience, shining a light on the hearts and lives of those at the centre of a crisis that is mostly only experienced through the headlines. Set on a fictional remote Scottish island, Limbo tells the story of a group of new arrivals awaiting the results of their asylum claims. It centers on Omar (played by rising star Amir El-Masry), a young Syrian musician who, thousands of miles from home, finds himself trapped by guilt, regret and the grief that he carries for the loss of his former identity. Separated from his family and burdened by a plaster cast on his arm, Omar wanders the epic landscapes searching for answers to a complex past and daunting future. But while he is stuck there, he isn’t alone. In between brief long-distance conversations with his parents and passing interactions with oddball locals, Omar and his new flatmates attend outrageously misjudged ‘cultural awareness’ classes, binge Friends boxsets, and debate attending the local open mic night, all the while waiting for the delivery of letters that will ultimately determine their future. About the director: Debuting director Ben Sharrock has a strong background in Arab history and suffering that informed his screenplay. He studied Arabic and politics for his undergraduate degree, lived in Damascus for the third year of his degree until the break-out of civil war in 2011 and worked in refugee camps in Algeria.Engaging for 14+Covid-19 Guidance: Masks are advised.
