Linked Data: The Conservation Approach

Are you ready to help archives realise their Linked Data vision? Come and find out how those in Conservation are approaching this task.

Linked Data seems to have been on the archival horizon for a very long time. The early 2010s saw a flurry of Linked Data research projects including <a href="http://trenchestotriples.blogspot.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Trenches to triples</a>,<a href="http://linkinglives.archiveshub.ac.uk/sample-page/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Linking Lives </a>and the JISC-funded<a href="http://openmetadatapathway.blogspot.com/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer"> Step Change </a>which led, amongst other outcomes, to the incorporation of Linked Data functionality into CALM. And yet, as we reach the early 2020s, Linked Data still only seems to reside on the horizon linked now with the equally shadowy <a href="https://www.ica.org/en/egad-ric-conceptual-model" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Records in Contexts</a>, in development since 2012. This webinar will seek to help us, as a sector, to get to grips with what realising the Linked Data vision might look like and how it might be brought about. Athanasios Velios of the University of Arts London is currently leading an attempt to realise this vision within the field of conservation, heading up the <a href="https://www.ligatus.org.uk/lcd/" target="_blank" data-msys-clicktrack="0" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">Linked Conservation Data</a> project and network. Following a presentation of his perspective on the project and on what is being done to realise Linked Data in an allied practice, we will open up the discussion to ask questions of ourselves as archive professionals about our own Linked Data vision and how it might finally be realised. Athanasios Velios is Reader in Documentation at Ligatus, University of the Arts London. Following undergraduate studies in Athens, he completed his PhD at the Royal College of Arts on computer applications to conservation. He was webmaster at the International Institute for Conservation (IIC). He established the Documentation Network of the Institute of Conservation in the UK (Icon). He was the Data Architect at the University of Oxford for the Oxford Linked Open Data project (OXLOD). He is an editor of the ICOM CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model.He co-chairs the ICOM Linked Art Group and he currently leads the Linked Conservation Data project: an AHRC-funded project to enable integration of conservation records.&quot;
