COST Action SEADDA will be hosting Linked Pasts VIII in person in York, UK from 29 November to 1 December 2022, along with asynchronous online participation taking place 24-28 November.

The annual Linked Pasts symposium brings together scholars, heritage professionals and other practitioners with an interest in Linked Open Data as applied to the study of the ancient and historical world. Panels and working groups at Linked Pasts are more goal-oriented than a conventional academic conference, and activities and agendas are often proposed, developed and revised by all participants at the event itself. The Linked Pasts Symposium is a formal partner of the Pelagios Network.

The eighth instalment of Linked Pasts will be hosted in-person from 29 November to 1 December 2022 by the Archaeology Data Service at the University of York and the COST Action Saving European Archaeology from the Digital Dark Age (SEADDA). Some activities during the symposium will be asynchronous and online, with work or discussions taking place in whatever medium is most appropriate to the activity and community in question. These activities will take place Nov 24–28 (remote).

Registration

Participation in the symposium is free, but advance registration is required. You will be able to choose to participate in the asynchronously, online, in person, or a combination.

Programme

Linked Pasts VIII will be a hybrid symposium. It will be possible to attend virtually, and we will run up to three concurrent hybrid activities in breakout seminar rooms, where attendees can interact both in person and online. Additional working group activities may be facilitated online.

The deadline for expressions of interest for travel funding and proposing an activity has passed, but it is still possible to register to participate.

Activities will take place in The King’s Manor, Department of Archaeology, University of York on 29 November and 1 December. Activities on 30 November will take place at The Guildhall.

For those of you who will have your travel funded by SEADDA (please do not book travel until you have received your official invitation from the eCOST system) we request you keep the cost of your travel to and from the venue (not including accommodation and subsistence) to 700 Euros or less, just to ensure we can include as many people as possible. York has many small hotels and B&Bs that are an easy walk from the rail station and the venue. Anything within or near the city walls will be very close will be no more than a 15 minute walk. The venue is a 10-15 minute walk from the rail station.

York rail station is on the main line between London and Edinburgh. The King's Cross rail station in London has many direct trains that will get you to York in about two hours (although they rarely run later than 21.00, so check the times). King's Cross is across the street from St. Pancras, making York a very easy destination via Eurostar.

The most convenient airport for York is Manchester. While it is around 90 minutes by train, the train goes directly from Manchester airport station to York.
